The recent passing of Royal Harrison Cloyd, the founding executive director for the Boston Center for the Arts who died recently, is remembered as a man who contributed so much to the arts community within Boston and to the Arts Center. In an article from MYSouthEnd.com, it was said "Royal Harrison Cloyd, is the reason the BCA exists as a home for working artists today."
O'Connell said "Royal's vision was to create a home for artists and the community. Like the Latin Quarter of the 1890s, he saw a bohemian neighborhood with cultural and artistic diversity among the resident artists and community patrons."
Dennis Crow, according to the Facebook page for Edinburgh, Scotland's Crow Bar, states that Crow "has played for 2 US Presidents and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald and Shelley Winters. Crow also paid tribute to Cloyd on his personal website. Crow said "My dear friend and mentor Royal Harrison Cloyd passed away last night. Founder of the Boston Center of The Arts, hero to many an artist, great insight, devoted Unitarian, founder of many causes and of great intelligence. Rest in peace Royal, you will be greatly missed."
His tribute to Cloyd further shows the impact this man had on great artists within Boston and around the world. According to Angela King, the Marketing Manager at the Boston Center for the Arts, "Art was his passion and he basically started the BCA. We spoke with his son and he remembers planting one of the first flowers in the BCA garden. Royal was here for so many years...he was the BCA." King says that many buildings at the center were built because of Cloyd's love and dedication to the art world and that they are a tribute to him.
