Earth Emerson has been working to make Emerson and the city of Boston environmentally aware for the past 10 years and its Sunday Boston Common Clean-ups have been a huge part of its success. "They (the Common Clean-ups) were suggested last year by Jared Pendak, a former member, because he was sick of seeing so much litter on our beautiful Common. We all agreed, so we started the Common Clean-ups," President of Earth Emerson Rachel Dutcher said.
The clean-ups started last October and will be held every Sunday at 1 p.m. Earth Emersonians meet at the Little Building outside of the Common and break up into groups to clean up one of Boston's most treasured parks. The group has 12 members who come regularly to clean up the Common, but more are expected, Dutcher said.
Earth Emerson had its kick-off last Sunday. "The kick-off involved the same components of any Common Clean-up except that we had a camera crew from Good Morning Emerson following groups around," Dutcher said.
Unlike last year, Earth Emerson plans on getting other area colleges involved in hopes that they will clean-up their campuses as well, Dutcher said. "This year we have expanded the event, and have invited other student organizations to reserve certain Sundays. We are also hoping to get Suffolk and Fisher students involved, as well as people that live and work in the area," Dutcher said.
Getting other schools in Boston involved will bring more environmental awareness to students, Dutcher said. Student Action is another huge part of Earth Emerson and the Common Clean-up "is an easy, quick, community service project that gets students involved in cleaning-up their campus," Dutcher said.
